Through blogging, I have accumulated OODLES of fantastic teacher resources. I have been donating items to the school my nephew (gr 2) and niece (gr K) attend. So far, the classroom teachers at thrilled with the items I have sent in with the kiddos. I met the teachers once, amid lots of hugs and thank yous.
I thought I would share with ALL of the teachers in the school by emailing the administration (who are aware of my donations, including many car loads from another source) asking if I could schedule a fun giveaway for teachers during Teacher Appreciation Day in May after school one day. I want to personally give the items to the teachers by drawing numbers and letting the teachers choose the bundle they want. Teachers need fun too.
As a former teacher, I know the time limitations on teachers and administration. But I must admit this administration is not the friendliest I’ve come across, and has yet to reply after a week.
I’m torn. Since this is the school my niece and nephew are attending, I would love to help the teachers with the donations. At the same time, I’m getting super peeved with this administration. I have two choices.
- One of the teachers had volunteered to provide her classroom after school for 30 – 60 minutes. She is one who has been the recipient of many donations and picks up the stuff from me and delivers to the school. Thereby ignoring administration as they have done to me.
- Move on by contacting another school and hope they will be more receptive.
If you are an administrator, I would love your opinion. I understand the hesitancy–sorta.
If you are a teacher, would you like to participate in an event like this?

What an exciting (and generous) idea! A few thoughts…I have run into the same problem with administrators when trying to do something helpful. Sometimes the problem is that they don’t check their email often–try a phone call perhaps? In some of the schools I’ve worked with, there is a parent group in charge of the Teacher Appreciation Day activities–they may be the ones to find. Also, I attended a service-learning workshop recently where the trainer insisted “it’s always harder to say no to a child”–send in a note to the principal with your niece/nephew! If you can’t get cooperation from their school, I would recommend finding one in your area that really struggles to raise funds or serves a high Title I population because they will be genuinely appreciative 🙂

I would do the Teacher Appreciation giveaway anyway. If you are offering these amazing resources at NO COST and getting no response, imagine what the teachers of the district face when they need to approach admin about something. They deserve it!

I appreciate all of the input. We have decided to go ahead with the offer from the teacher for her room. Her words….”trust me, the teachers know what you do for us and will welcome you!”
I know I’m not a blip on the admin radar, but I know how much the teachers use the supplies I donate.
As long as the teachers use the items for the students, that is my goal. All is good! 🙂
