We’ve Flipped 4 Gold

Finding appropriate educational apps in the vast forest of apps can prove taxing.  Admittedly, there are mindless apps on our devices just for fun, but we found that simply loading educational apps, the kiddos just have to try out the new games.  Educational apps are a bonus!  Although the kids are old enough to know the app is a math game, the challenge to attain a higher score is the driving factor.

Flip4Gold, created by a Toronto mom, with the unparalleled assistance of her four daughters provide a beautiful simple math app that progresses with the student.  Students help Quatro the Lemur King protect his treasure by solving random math equations.  A roll of the dice with a random operand, students must then select the number tiles that add up to the solution to the equation.

Flip4Gold2
Pressing the “ROLL” button provides a random equation.

Flip4Gold3
We did experience a bit of difficulty with the division symbol pictured above.  The app provides students with not only the equation, but the answer as well.  Look for the “3” in the bottom right corner.  Note, the answer is not always provided.

Any combination of number tiles selected that adds up to the correct answer works.  BUT, those number tiles disappear forcing students to solve the equation in a variety of different combinations.  Tiles turn red if the tiles do not add up to the correct answer.

Flip4Gold7
The roll of the dice are random creating a situation where the answer cannot be attained with the remaining tiles.  Rerolling for a new equation takes care of that issue.  The game ends when all tiles are used, or it is no longer possible to use the tiles.

The PILE of gold coins in the congratulatory screen was a winner!

As students progress through the game, badges are earned moving students to the next set of challenging equations.

ALWAYS count on the kiddos to really dig into an app or program to put it through it’s paces.  They are NOT afraid to try every option available.  Which is exactly what happened locating the “Free Play” option on the main menu.

Flip4Gold8
The Free Play option allows for complete customization of the app by the teacher, parent, or student.

Flip4Gold9
Students select the type of equations presented before beginning Free Play.  Moving from two dice equations into four dice equations adds yet another level for student comprehension.

Students and Teachers will FLIP for Flip4Gold.  Download the Flip4Gold coloring book or individual pages to hype the game with students and parents.  We’re a fan of apps like Flip4Gold that develop logical reasoning, strategy and problem-solving skills that is FUN.

One teeny tiny little aspect of the app that garners high praise from us is the LACK of irritating background music and sound.  Bravo to the developers for eliminating distracting sound.

Progressing through the game, got my teacher brain going.  How could a classroom teacher who doesn’t have the luxury of technology, (yes they do exist) use the app?  This game could easily be adapted to play in a whole group, small group, or center setting.

A FREE Educational app!
