How can the Sacramento region’s community best support its schools and improve the region’s literacy rate?
I am a kindergarten teacher. It has always been my belief that my most important job is to give my students the desire to read. Once they WANT to be readers, the rest is easy. Many young students today are not read to at home. They rarely see reading modeled at home. Immersing young students in great literature is the key. Technology affords students today the chance to read, listen to and interact with books. Providing classrooms with these resources will not make a difference if the students do not have many opportunities to use the resources. Having volunteers come into the classrooms as readers and to listen to students read makes a huge impact. Volunteers can also assist students who are accessing books via technology. Volunteers and access to great books will make a difference. Create a love of reading to create a reader. Literacy rates will naturally increase as the numbers of readers rises.
Why do you want to be an investor in education in the Sacramento region?
This is my 36th year teaching. Well over half of my life has been invested in education. All children matter, location does not.
