We do not have salad bars in our schools any longer. When I began teaching 20 years ago, teachers at my school could at least order a salad in the morning to be picked up at lunch time. Then out district did something crazy that I never understood, nor did anyone else in the school. If the school cafeteria did not have a recipe for the item, it could not be served. There went our healthy, satisfying lunch! Other schools primarily secondary did have salad bars for students, however, I’m not sure if they still exist.
Time for our district to apply for Salad Bars to Schools grant program to offer staff and students a more appealing and fresh option. I must admit, our school lunches are HORRIBLE! But for some who may not be able to afford to send a lunch with children, any lunch is better than NO lunch.
If your school or district is in the same position as ours, maybe it’s time for you to share this post with your Principal and staff to begin a campaign to bring “Salad Bars to YOUR Schools!” Given the CHOICE, children will eat better.
Applications are accepted year round for the grant program. As you look at the website, be sure to look at the map showing all of the schools and districts funded—well over $8 MILLION!
