Product Spotlight .@CarolinaBio #TeacherGiveaway (X 11/18/14)

CarolinaBiologicalWisconsinFastPlants
We take plants for granted.  They are just there right in front of us every day.  Does anyone notice the plant in the various stages?  What is pollination?  How does it happen?   What happens when a plant dies?  Why do plants die or have near death experiences? These questions and more are answered with the Carolina Biological Wisconsin Fast Plants Plant Nutrition Kit.  This kit has BEES!  Not live bees, dried bees, to perform the actual pollination!  The only thing missing in this kit is the honey from the bees!

Throughout this inquiry activity, students see and experience how important nutrition is for plants, just as it is for all living things.  Groups of students create various scenarios using fertilizer pellets to see how the plant performs in the different environments.  The teacher manual included with the kit provides clear descriptions of how plants should react to the different environments.

Introduction or reinforcement of science terminology such as “control” drive home the necessity of proper terms in the proper environments.  Adding the correct fertilizer pellets as the control group along with incorrect fertilizer in 3 other compartments provide students with enough information to complete an inquiry with the hypothesis, expected outcome and actual outcome.

The bees are used to to manually perform pollination and cross pollination.  Who came up with this?  Brilliant!  While waiting for the plant to grow, students can observe the bees using the included magnifying glasses, or microscope if you have them.  We’re still working on our Wisconsin Fast Plants Plant Nutrition Kit because we just keep adding to the content due to the already rich content provided by Carolina.com.  Due to the amount of detail, it is taking longer in our first grade class, but the students are learning so much.

Our teachers were enamored with the wonderful teacher resource guide included with the kit, but especially liked that they can find the EXACT state standards the unit is covering on the Carolina.com website, including the appropriate Common Core State Standards.  Nothing is more beautiful on a list of state standards than a PRINT button!  JOY!

Additional standards can be met in math and language arts by incorporating graphing, estimation, and writing

I’d love to win this and use it as part of my life cycles unit! The butterfly eggs I order would be placed on the fast plants and when they hatch the caterpillars would eat the plants! Great way to show kids the food chain!

This is really cool. We have a pre-k, 1st, and 3/4 grade teacher trying to introduce more science in their classrooms. Our 2nd grade teacher worked hard with other staff members to build a greenhouse. this would be great for any of them to use. If I won it, I would be giving it to them.

We do a lot of different studies relating to plants and gardening. This will fit right into that.

I could use this with my 3rd and 4th graders to enrich our studies of animal and plant life cycles as well as animal and plant adaptations.
