My Favorite Christmas Book

I wanted to share my FAVORITE Christmas story to read to children. Although this is a very old book, it is available on Amazon! WooHoo.

“Morris’s Disappearing Bag” by Rosemary Wells

Morris is the youngest in his rabbit family. He SO wants to share the gifts his siblings received, but they will have nothing to do with Morris until he discovers a missed gift under the tree. Morris finds a disappearing bag in the box. Now his siblings are more than happy to share their gifts with Morris after watching Morris disappear.

As the school librarian, I read this book every year to the younger students. I then give each student a “disappearing bag.” We then proceed to make body parts disappear and reappear ending with getting in the bag to completely disappear from the classroom teacher when she/he arrives to pick up the class. Since we have done this routine for so many years, the teacher plays along when I explain that I have lost the class.

Amid all of the snickers, laughter, and occasional body parts appearing, the children pop out of their disappearing bags yelling surprise as the teacher gets the Academy Award for “Best Surprise Performance by a Teacher.”

I even read the book to my college librarian classes!

Over the years, I have had teacher, students, parents, siblings, and grandparents tell me that Morris’s Disappearing Bag was the best book I ever read. I’ve had reports of pets, homework, siblings and a multitude of interesting objects disappear.

If you haven’t read Morris’s Disappearing Bag,” it is a MUST read for years to come.

Hi Penny! I’m an avid reader so naturally, I enjoy book recommendations for my 4 year old! I will be sure to check this out.

Anyway, I haven’t read to a group of kids in a while but if I were asked to, I would choose: There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly by Simms Taback. Of course Amazon has it.

It’s about an old lady who (surprise) swallowed a fly. It tells about the other insects/animals she swallowed to get rid of the fly, and teaches kids about the food chain in a humorous manner.
