Quality literature should be available to all students, even struggling readers. This is why I allow some students to follow along with a book using headphones. For some, their auditory comprehension level is higher than their independent reading level. They can still be part of our class discussions if they have been allowed to listen to the audiobook. I also like to use audiobooks for those students who are academically capable, but struggle with staying focused. A lively narrator with an expressive voice can keep them engaged and really hook them. At times, the whole class might listen to an audiobook together just to give them a break from hearing my voice. An audiobook models fluency and expression. This valuable tool has unlimited possibilities in the classroom!
