I am an art teacher in a k-5 Title One school in Arizona. I am retiring very soon, May 21st. I loved teaching art but found that it was a struggle getting art supplies for my students. I was lucky I found out about Donorschoose.org, The Dreaming Zebra, Treasures4Teachers and Kids in Need Foundation. Without their support, my kids would never have had creative opportunities beyond paper and glue. For the past 2 years, I have had over 800 kids every 7 school days, which meant the drain on my art supplies was unbelievable. I had to find a way to teach that many kids. The drain on my wallet was even more drastic. I am not happy about retiring, I feel I could go on until 70. But, I am so tired of fighting a losing battle with my school that I am giving up. But, that is just the tip of the iceberg. I found that the high cost of Medicare is coming out of Social Security. My AZ Retirement account is also very small. I don’t know how I will long I will be able to hang onto my house, my daughter, my two rescue dogs and four feral cats. My student loan is not paid off, and utilities in Arizona are very high. I know you help active teachers and really appreciate that, but this old retiring teacher is now facing a very big hardship: life in the retired lane.
Can you see a way to help us ? Sincerely, Marianne Griffith
