Creating Young Authors

PencilsErasersBlankBooks
We have a classroom full of little writers, anxious to compete in the school and possibly district annual Young Author’s Conference.  We needed to get our little authors excited to create their very own published book and we turned to Oriental Trading.

Begin at the beginning, what is the writing process?  Inspiration for writing is found everywhere, we found a video created by Miss Bellotti’s class that helped us to begin our unit.

Adding to the inspiration, students were presented with the box of writing products selected just for them.

By far, the product receiving the biggest reception was the Writing Process Pocket Folder.  Looking like any ole folder, opening reveals FOUR pockets with each step in the writing process printed on the organizing pocket.  We found another use!  Students set up the folders as corrals providing more focus thereby alleviating distractions.

Numerous peer chats provided students with valuable brainstorming, revising and helpful perspective viewpoints they may not have thought of themselves.  Encouraging kindness, we utilized these AWESOME Dr. Seuss Scratch Off Rewards.  The teacher wrote rewards available to students, then placed the scratch off sticker on top of that.  The best part–students determined if another student should receive a reward. Everyone loves scratch offs!

Settling in to write stories is work these students took very seriously.  I WISH I could publish the images with their faces.  They are all so excited and proud of their work.  Our goal to provide an atmosphere of ease and excitement was heightened by the numerous items we obtained from Oriental Trading.  Not a single student lost any item…after all, they wouldn’t be able to complete their task without the utensils provided!

Heads and hands to the grind stone, each creating a unique story in their journals with their “I Love to Write” pencils and Neon Funny Face Cap Erasers.

In a little over a week, our second graders created final masterpieces in the blank booklets that are ready to compete for recognition in the school Young Author’s Conference.  We hope many are selected to move to the district competition.

We’re betting parents will put these published works in the keepsake box!

THANK YOU Mrs. McDowell’s Class!!!
