Halloween was the only time I bribed my students with TOTAL parental support. As the Media Specialist and Technology Specialist, I had every student in the school once per week in the library, the next week would be in the computer lab….which everyone loved!
I would make a deal with every single class that if each student in the class brought me one piece of chocolate from their Trick or Treating, I would let them have a free day in the computer lab. I made it VERY clear to bring the “good” chocolate, not the stuff they didn’t like, because I didn’t like it either. It had to be name brand.
Without fail for 15 years, someone always forgot to bring one piece…..but another child always came to the rescue with a “spare” piece in case anyone forgot. Seriously, every year that happened.
Unlike most people, I am not much of a chocolate person, but my two assistants were more than happy to take care of it for me.
One year the one student told his mom about our “deal.” This mom and another brought in TWO pillowcases full of chocolate. The neighborhood they lived in had very few kids, so people were dumping the entire contents of the treats into the kids’ bags. I tried like mad to refuse. Those two parents returned each year with a bag of chocolate, thankfully much smaller and we would laugh at their pillowcase year.
What traditions do you have at Halloween for your class?
